It consists of two large historic building masses--at least one of which was moved to this site-- and a series of smaller, non-historic additions. The building mass to the south is the most visually prominent, and the one with the strongest historic associations. It is a portion of the original building at the Bozeman Fish Hatchery, constructed in 1895. This portion of the building originally housed offices and an apartment; it was separated from the remaining (larger) portion of the hatchery structure when the entire building was removed from its original location in 1965. It is 1-1/2 stories high, with a gable roof. Its most striking visual feature is a large, two story tower at the southwest corner. The tower serves as the primary entry for the current building. It features a flared, pyramidal hip roof, dentil blocks and other limited detailing suggestive of the Shingle style, and nine-over-one double-hung windows in historic openings. An historic, single-story shed-roofed porch occupies the west elevation of the tower area. The second primary building mass, immediately to the north, is a large, rectangular structure on a north-south axis. It has a gambrel roof, and at least a partial foundation of ornamental concrete block; the massing suggests that it was originally constructed as a barn, and the concrete block foundation suggests an approximate construction date of ca. 1910. It is likely on its original site. Much of the barn's original east, west, and south elevations are obscured by the fish hatchery building, or by newer, single-story additions. Modern entry doors and an exterior fire escape stair have been added to the north elevation. Three large, non-historic additions complete the overall building mass. Their construction dates are unknown, but all postdate 1965, and they may be as recent as the 1990s. The south elevation is defined by a large, single-story rectangular bay with a shallow hip roof and continuous banks of one-over-one double-hung windows. Though of recent construction, its dedsign emulates that of the hatchery portion of the building, with dentil blocks below the eaves. Large, shed-roofed additions also exist along the full length of the east elevation of the combined mass, and much of the west elevation; the west elevation addition wraps around a portion of the north wall fof the former barn area. The entire building is clad in narrow-exposure lapped siding. This siding is largely or entirely hardboard, and is thus non-historic, though it is possible that some older wood siding still remains. (Historically, the hatchery building displayed a mix of wood and shingle cladding, and the walls of the upper tower area were shingled.) The fenestration in the tower area appears to be largely historic, though it has been heavily altered elsewhere; modern casement and fixed-light windows are present in the barn area, and the shed additions. Except for the barn portion of the building, the entire structire rests on a concrete foundation. Roof surfaces are covered with asphalt shingles, and a number of metal vents pierce the roofline. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 Property Name: Bozeman Fish Hatchery building Site Number: 24 GA 1836 HISTORY OF PROPERTY ® See Additional Information Page This building is an amalgamation of two, formerly-unrelated historic structures, at least one of which was moved to the site. As such, it displays a complex history that is only partially resolved. The best-known and most visually prominent of these buildings (though the smaller) is the southern portion of the current structure. It is a portion of the original main building at the Bozeman National Fish Hatchery, constructed in 1895. The hatchery--the first in the region and one of only five nationwide at the time--was established by the federal government in 1893 at the mouth of Bridger Canyon, north of Bozeman. Work on the complex was completed by 1896; the overall facility included a large hatchery/office building, residences, ponds, and outdoor"raceways" for fish propagation. Major buildings at the hatchery displayed design elements of the Shingle style, and were apparently constructed using standardized federal plans. (Similar buildings survive today at the D. C. Booth National Fish Hatchery in Spearfish, South Dakota.) The primary hatchery building was expanded in the 1930s, but by the early 1960s had become functionally obsolete. The hatchery complex itself underwent a change of mission in 1966, transitioning to a research facility; it is now known as the Bozeman Fish Technology Center. As a result, the original hatchery building was sold and removed in the summer of 1965. The largest portion of the building, that originally housed the hatchery tanks, became a stock barn at the William Huffine Ranch, approximately one-half mile north of the hatchery. It remains at that location in 2011. The remainder of the building, which once contained offices and an apartment, is the portion of the old hatchery now at this site. It was also removed from the hatchery location in 1965, but the date of its placement here is undocumented. When the portion of the old hatchery building was placed at this address, it was apparently combined (...continued) INFORMATION SOURCES/BIBLIOGRAPHY ❑ See Additional Information Page "Bozeman Fish Hatchery Getting Major Changes." The old Bozeman National Fish Hatchery complex was the first such facility in the Pacific Northwest, and among the first in the nation; as such, it is important in the history of fisheries management and biology in the United States. The building's design, standardized by the federal government, was also characteristic both of the era and of the nation's early fisheries program. The remnant of the hatchery building at this site, however, has a very greatly diminished level of integrity. The structure at this location is only a portion of the original hatchery building, and it was moved here at an undocumented, non- historic date. It has been combined with a former barn not associated with the hatchery, and the merged structure has a largely-new fenestration pattern and non-original wall cladding. Because of the substantial loss of integrity caused by these changes, this building is not eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places. INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page Overall, this building displays a low level of historic integrity. It is a non-historic combination of two historically unrelated buildings, at least one of which was moved to the site. Three of the four elevations of the combined structure are largely obscured by non-historic additions. Much or all of the exterior wall cladding is non-historic, and with the exception of the tower area at the southwest corner, the fenestration pattern has been heavily altered. Despite these heavy alterations, the tower portion of the building retains design elements reflective of the original hatchery building construction. They are largely overshadowed, however, by the changes to the remainder of the building. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD ADDITIONAL INFORMATION PAGE Property Name: Bozeman Fish Hatchery building Site Number: 24 GA 1836 HISTORY OF PROPERTY, CONTINUED with a second historic building, a former barn of unknown origin. The foundation of the barn appears to be historic, made of an ornamental concrete block material that was in common use in the decade surrounding 1910; this suggests the possibility that the barn structure is on its original site. An aerial photograph of the property dating from the early 1970s shows the barn in place by that time. The land surrounding this property was in agricultural use since the 1860s, until the increasing urban footprint of the city of Bozeman began enveloping the site a century later. The presence of mature, planted trees nearby suggests that an historic farmstead may have occupied the location, which fronted the historic alignment of US 191 (to the south of the building). The area immediately surrounding the site began to change dramatically in the early 1960s. In 1962, US Highway 191 was improved, and relocated to an alignment just north of the barn location. Commercial development began along the relocated highway soon after, and in the late 1970s a large shopping mall was constructed across the relocated highway immediately to the north of the barn. At some point during these years, the barn and hatchery buildings were apparently combined into a single structure, and remodeled for commercial use. (Because of inconsistencies in addressing and other issues, it was not possible to determine the date of this change.) Assessors records indicate a major remodeling of the building in 1998. In the late 1990s and early 200s a variety of food service businesses operated from this address. The property is vacant in 2011.
