Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features to
correlate with the Site Map.
The Edward and Stella Anacker house is a wood-framed, 1-1/2 story building, with a rectangular mass measuring
approximately 23' (N-S) by 67' (E-W). The building displays minimal Colonial Revival design elements. It is on a
comcrete foundation, has asbestos-shingle exterior cladding, and a gable roof surfaced with asphalt shingles. The
building is visually defined by a prominent shed-roofed dormer centered on the north gable face, extending
approximately two-thirds of the length of the roof face. A similar, but smaller dormer occupies part of the west half of
the south roof face. The south roof face is pierced by a large, rectangular, red-brick chimney.
The building's fenestration pattern appears to be largely or wholly historic. Doors are hollow-core wood, and most
windows are wood-framed, double-hung units, with each sash containing two horizontal lights. The primary entry faces
south, with a centered entry opening to a large concrete stoop. The rear entry opens to a large, non-historic wooden
deck, which measures approximately 30' by 30'.
A amall, roughly-built carport addition is on the east side of the north elevation. It is wood-framed with open walls and a
shallow-pitch shed roof. It appears to be non-historic.
No other buildings or structures exist on the site in 2011. When this site was first recorded in 2003, a small garage
building was observed near the northeast corner of the site. This building is no longer extant, though a concrete pad in
the area may mark its former location.

HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page
Located near the western edge of the City of Bozeman, the area surrounding this site was likely used for agricultural
purposes throughout the late 19th and early 20 centuries. The land received irrigation water from the Farmer's Canal,
which ran near the south and east boundaries of the tract, and early 20t"-century deed transfers for the property
typically also included shares of stock in the Farmer's Canal Company.
As the population of Bozeman grew during the middle years of the 20t" Century, the city's urban footprint expanded
westward into this area. The area was formally subdivided for residential purposes in 1946 by Marguerite Kirk, a
prominent Gallatin County landowner. Her"Mountain Vista" subdivision. described as a"suburb" of Bozeman,
contained eight residential tracts, all fronting Huffine Lane to the south. Huffine Lane, the primary travel route heading
west from Bozeman, was also designated as US Highway 191. US 191 was relocated to the north in 1962, and the
road is now an extension of Bozeman's West College Street.
This property consists of Tract 1 of the Mountain Vista Subdivision. The lot was purchased by Edward and Stella
Anacker in 1951, and their house was built in 1953. Anacker taught Chemistry at nearby Montana State University, and
in his later years became very well-known locally as a long-distance runner, establisheng the annual Bridger Ridge
Run. Anacker continued residing at the house until shortly before his death in April 2011.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE ❑ See Additional Information Page
The Edward and Stella Anacker house is a generally well-preserved example of mid-twentieth century middle-cass
residential construction in the United States. Typical for the era, the house displays only limited architectural detail, a
style sometimes referred to as"Minimal Traditional." In this house, the large dormer areas and shingle style asbestos
cladding, suggest a design reference to higher-style Colonial Revival residences of earlier years.
The building itself displays a diminished though acceptible level of exterior architectural integrity. The integrity of the
overall site, however, has been lessened through the removal of the former garage building, visual encroachment by
the widening of South 19th Avenue, and the construction of modern, visually-intrusive apartment buildings to the west.
These changes have greatly diminished the property's iintegrity of setting, feeling, and association, and for this reason
the building is not considered eligible for National Register of Historic Places listing.
INTEGRITY(location, design,setting,materials,workmanship,feeling,association) ❑ See Additional Information Page
The surviving building at the site retains a high level of integrity overall; the original form, fenestration pattern, and
cladding all appear to survive wholly intact. A non-historic carport structure and open deck have been added to the rear
(north) elevation of the building, but do not heavily detract from the overall building.
More substantive changes have taken place at the site level. The Feature 2 garage building observed at the site in
2003 is no longer extant, presumably removed in conjunction with the recent widening of adjacent South 191h Avenue.
The widened street is itself a visual encroachment on the house. The recent construction of large apartment buildings
immediately to the west is also a visual intrusion to the site.
