Number the buildings and features to correlate with the Site Map. This building is a single-story house, "L"-shaped in overall plan, constructed of medium-diameter saddle-notched logs. The logs are peeled, and have been stained. The building rests on a concrete foundation. The gable roof has log purlins, and is currently surfaced with asphalt shingles(likely not original). The primary fagade faces south. There is a principal east-west axis, with a gabled wing extending south from the west end of that axis. In turn, a gabled, single-car garage extends south from the west end of the wing. All massing appears to be fully historic. A visually prominent exterior fireplace chimney (historic), constructed of river cobble, is on the building's north elevation. A portion of the foundation area at the south elevation (at the wing) is veneered with stone; this may or not be historic. The building's fenestration pattern appears to be largely or wholly historic. Doors are wood, and most windows are wood-framed, 1/1 double-hung units, placed singly or in pairs. A large, two-unit picture window area exists on the east half of the south elevation, with each window divided into six lights. The garage door is paneled wood, and probably not original. The house is on a large landscaped lot, with numerous mature deciduous and evergreen trees. Modern apartment buildings have been constructed on adjacent lots to the east and west, diminishing the property's integrity of setting MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 Property Name: Delbert and Rita Myrick House Site Number: 24 GA 1833 HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page Located near the western edge of the City of Bozeman, the area surrounding this site was likely used for agricultural purposes throughout the late 19th and early 20 centuries. The land received irrigation water from the Farmer's Canal, which ran near the south and east boundaries of the tract, and early 20th-century deed transfers for the property typically also included shares of stock in the Farmer's Canal Company. As the population of Bozeman grew during the middle years of the 201h Century, the city's urban footprint expanded westward into this area. The area was formally subdivided for residential purposes in 1946 by Marguerite Kirk, a prominent Gallatin County landowner. Her"Mountain Vista" subdivision. described as a "suburb" of Bozeman, contained eight residential tracts, all fronting Huffine Lane to the south. Huffine Lane, the primary travel route heading west from Bozeman, was also designated as US Highway 191. US 191 was relocated to the north in 1962, and the road is now an extension of Bozeman's West College Street. This property is a re-plat of Tract 5 of the Mountain Vista Subdivision. Kirk sold the lot to Delbert C. & Rita J. Myrick in 1947, and they owned the property until 1964. Tax assessment records estimate that the current house was built in 1946. Myrick was almost certainly the builder of the house, and it is possible that the building was constructed while the recordation of the subdivision plat was still being finalized. City directories list Delbert Myrick as being director of the U.S. Department of Agriculture"Farmers Economics Research Division," presumably affiliated with Montana State University. Houses such as this were constructed in Bozeman in small numbers during the middle third of the twentieth century, and were designed to reflect the community's mountainous setting. In materials and style, the buildings emulated some farm and ranch residences that had been constructed in western Montana since the late 19th century, and as such, they suggest an indigenous architectural form. In Bozeman, most houses utilizing this style were built at the periphery of town, in areas that are now becoming urbanized as the developed footprint of the city expands. Some of these buildings have been lost as a result. As a quality, well-preserved example of a characteristic local architectural style, the Delbert and Rita Myrick house is eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places, with local significance under Criterion "C." INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page In general, this house retains a very high level of historic integrity. The building's original massing, materials, and fenestration pattern appear to remain wholly intact. The only substantive noted changes to the exterior are the non- original roofing materials and the garage door; neither change substantially detracts from the building's overall appearance. Large, modern apartment buildings have been constructed to the east and west of the site. They constitute a visual intrusion, and diminish the property's integrity of setting.
