Dear members of the Bozeman City Commission and City Manager,
I am contacting you with concern over the proposed recommendation for dissolution of the Residential
Permit Parking Districts – as it pertains to the Bozeman Senior High School district.
I recognize that the city needs to find strategic, long term solutions to parking issues– particularly in the
downtown corridor, but 'avoiding a one size fits all method of public parking management.’ The proposed
time limited parking zone model (two hours + extended parking for permit holders) is not a good solution in
our neighborhood. The demand is for long term (school hours) parking. Do we want students to be
returning to cars to jockey for new parking every couple hours? How could the city feasibly enforce the
increased cost of enforcing the two hour limit? Would we then pay for the increased enforcement cost and
also not have access to the parking in front of our homes?
The number of spaces in our neighborhood will not have any significant impact considering the number of
students at Bozeman High. Our block consists of 24 dwelling units and almost every unit holds at least 1
parking permit. Having the High School as a neighbor is already a challenge - the impacts of traffic, buses
and congestion – adding competing for parking with thousands of high school students daily will cause an
undue burden on our neighborhood. We are not a mixed use neighborhood that will benefit from added
short term parking. We are a primarily(R-1) neighborhood, there are no business nor developments looking
for increased parking options.
I would request that the Commission follow the recommendation that in the Parking Services Division
'undertake meaningful public engagement to solicit feedback on potential changes to the residential
parking permit districts' before recommending dissolution of our neighborhood parking permit district.
Thanks for your consideration in this matter.
