Number the buildings and features to correlate with the Site Map. 1. The 840 gross square foot residence was most likely constructed pre-1898 as evidenced by the reference to"improvements" on the property in the 1893 will of Fredrick Edmunds. A rear addition was removed sometime prior to the 1927 Sanborn Map and a new rear addition was constructed sometime post-1943. An enclosed front entry was added around 1996 according to the current owner who has lived near the subject property for the last 12 years. The Montana Historical &Architectural Inventory states: "This detached one-story single-family residence has a rectangular plan with a small shed roof over the entranceway. The one-bay fagade is symmetrical and consists of a central front entrance flanked by two 4/4 double-hung windows. The roof over the entrance is supported by two wood posts. The frame construction is finished in shiplap and rests on a concrete foundation. The gable roof is covered with metal shingles and features boxed overhanging eaves. There is a central metal stovepipe. The axis of the roof is perpendicular to the street". (Note that the house actually does not include metal shingles or boxed eaves.)The house has a galvanized steel sheet metal roof. Simple drop horizontal siding has been painted white and the wood trim is painted dark green. Note that the siding exposure varies on the original structure and on the subsequent additions. 2. The dilapidated alley shed was likely constructed at the same time as the house as evidenced by the 1904 Sanborn Map. It has a 240 square foot footprint and has an "U shaped plan. The shed is located approximately one foot off of the alley(gable ridge runs parallel to the alley). The gable roof has a pitch of 13.5/ 12. An addition to the east elevation includes a low shed roof. The siding is simple unpainted drop horizontal siding and the roof has remains of wood shingles. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE 3 Property Name: 433 North Black Avenue Site Number: 24- HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page The house and shed are associated with the general residential aspect of the Civic Phase of Bozeman's historic/architectural development. The Abstract of Title for the property describes some of the property's history through its owners. One possible construction date is 1883, when James Kelly, the editor of the Bozeman Chronicle, and his wife, Mary Ann Kelly sold the property to Frederick Edmonds for$1000. This "consideration" is significantly more than earlier considerations; however, interestingly, it is also more than later considerations which may make this data unreliable. The earliest reference to actual "improvements" on the property is found in the 1893 will of Fredrick Edmunds. Mature hedges and trees line the property. A narrow concrete pathway connects the central door to the sidewalk along North Black Avenue. This small house sits a few feet above the grade of the sidewalk. Structurally, the residence is dilapidated with a substandard foundation, bowing walls, sloping floors and other significant decay. The shed in the rear of the property is near collapsing. Refer to attached drawings and photographs.
