Concisely,accurately,and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features to

The structure at 403 North Broadway Avenue arrived at its current site between 1947 and 1950 and likely dates to just after the turn
of the 20t"century.
The side gable roofline is parallel to the street,and the roof is clad in grey asphalt shingles. A shed-roofed addition to the west is
covered in the same asphalt shingles.The front fagade is arranged in a 1:1 wood window-door-1:1 wood window pattern. The south
elevation includes on 1:1 hung wood window centered under the gable,and a band of window openings(currently covered in
plastic)which wrap the south and west sides of the structure. The north elevation includes a similar 1:1 hung window and wood
door that leads to a raised deck on the north side of the building.All windows and doors in the house appear to be original.
It is unclear if the building is structurally built of log,or if the exterior log is a veneer around a frame construction.The entire
exterior of the building is clad in logs laid perpendicular with an overhang at the edges. The chinking between the logs appears to
be either cement or a type of caulking.The structure sits on a poured-concrete foundation,which includes hopper-style wood
windows,indicating an inhabitable basement.

The history of this property is obscure.The address first shows up as inhabited in the 1950 Bozeman City Directory,when a Mrs.
Nellie Oleson resided at 403 North Broadway from 1950 through 1967.' The structure was likely moved into the lot and placed on a
new poured-concrete foundation sometime between 1947 and 19502,although the structure's previous location is unknown.
Laid out by the Northern Pacific Railroad immediately before construction of their Main Line trackage through Bozeman in 1883,
North Broadway Avenue represents a rare diagonal street in Bozeman's primarily north-south,east-west street grid.The street first
appears on the cover sheet for Bozeman's 1891 Sanborn Fire Insurance map,but no documentation of structures on North
Broadway is included in Sanborn's survey of insured structures in the area.3 The 1912 Sanborn map indicates the construction of
industrial structures adjacent to the railroad tracks at the northern end of Broadway;a development pattern that continued in this
neighborhood through the first half of the 201h century.4
The 1927 Sanborn maps reflect the construction of a number of residences on the western side of North Broadway Avenue with
small footprints and front porches.5 These residences reflect the burgeoning mixed-use industrial and residential area that continues
to characterize northeast Bozeman,and are primarily craftsman or vernacular bungalow type structures.Both the 1927 map and the
1943 map indicate a vacant lot on the corner of North Broadway and East Fridley Street,although the N.B.Keeney&Co. Seed Pea
warehouse operated directly across the street. The residence at 403 north Broadway first shows up on the 1957 Sanborn Map for the
City of Bozeman:

City Directories indicate a number of occupants for the residence as well as a couple of periods of multiple-year vacancies.
Residents of the structure were primarily workers at nearby industrial or commercial operations,or have no occupancy listed in the
City directory.

The residence at 403 North Bozeman Avenue was moved to the surrounding neighborhood 20 years after the
construction of most of the adjacent residential structures. Its log construction is unusual in the primarily vernacular and
craftsman streetscape. The structure's original location is unknown. For these reasons, the structure would not
contribute to a potential historic district in the area under Criteria A.
Research into the residents of the structure failed to reveal persons of historic significance associated with the house,
thus the structure would not be eligible for the National Register under Criterion B.
The structure does typify post- 1900 log construction in Montana. Its squared corners reflect a more decorative method
of log construction; a departure from earlier structures built in the pioneering era. As it is not in its original location, nor
on a rubble-rock foundation more typical of this construction style, the building would not be eligible under Criterion C.
It is unknown if the property would be eligible for the National Register under Criterion D; potential for archaeology.

The structure was moved to this site in 1950 from its original location, and a rear addition was likely added at this time.
For these reasons, the property does not maintain integrity of location, design or setting.
The building does maintain many original exterior materials, including logs and wood 1:1 windows. The building does
not sit on its original foundation, and the roof has been replaced.
The original workmanship is present, but the feeling cannot be determined given the relocation of the structure. The
historic association; that of a working-class cottage remains.
Given the numerous changes to the property, the building does not maintain sufficient historic integrity to be eligible to
the National Register of Historic Places.
