RE: City of Bozeman Drought Tolerant Landscape and Irrigation Designs for City Medians
Ms. Crough and members of the selection committee:
The DHM Design (DHM) team is excited for the opportunity to respond to this Request for Proposal for the Drought Tolerant Landscape and Irrigation
Designs for City Medians. We, as a team of landscape architects, ecological planners, and graphic designers, believe that our skills and creativity can
uniquely contribute to this collaboration and are thrilled to propose our approach to assist the City of Bozeman with this project.
DHM understands the importance of water conservation and sustainable landscapes. As Landscape Architects, these are values that we prioritize in all
aspects of our work. DHM has over 42 years of experience in designing beautiful places that incorporate sustainable and xeriscape design principles
within the landscape. We believe that water-wise landscapes can be as beautiful as traditional landscapes. These healthy, balanced landscapes can
be accomplished through thoughtful planning and design, reducing lawn areas, ensuring healthy soils, using appropriate plant material with mulch,
installing efficient irrigation systems, and through seasonal maintenance.
Our team has decades of experience in designing and planning projects similar in scope and size both nationally and in Montana. Shara Kees will lead
this effort and will be the primary Point-of-Contact / Project Manager. I will be Principal-in-Charge and will assist with landscape design. Our team
will also include Ken DiPaolo and Jill Bersano with HydroSystems•KDI, Inc. (HydroSystems), for Irrigation Consulting and Water Management. Their
expertise will enable our firm to provide superior services in planning design and technical documentation.
DHM is highly qualified to assist you with the next steps to creating a Drought Tolerant Landscape and Irrigation Designs for the City Medians. If
selected, our team is available to begin work immediately on this important effort. Our proposal demonstrates that we have the experience, capacity,
and excitement to successfully complete this project for the City of Bozeman.
Please feel free to email Shara Kees (skees@dhmdesign.com) or myself (ckees@dhmdesign.com) or contact us at 406.219.2012 should you have any

As landscape architecture connects people to places, DHM understands
the importance of roadways and medians to provide aesthetic and
functional improvements to transportation corridors. Working with
municipalities around the region, DHM Design has designed these
features to create safety and pedestrian refuge areas, drainage, or
aesthetic traffic barriers. We work with communities to understand the
goals of each project from maintenance and budget parameters to the
physical expression of a community’s brand. Through close collaboration
with transportation, civil and irrigation engineers, we work toward the
best outcome for each project.

We carefully design to minimize water consumption and to demonstrate
that water-wise gardens can be as beautiful as traditional landscapes.
DHM incorporates seven principles that save water and create healthy,
balanced, beautiful landscapes.
1. Thoughtful Planning and Design: We identify microclimates
and place plants accordingly.
2. Healthy Soils: We understand the importance of creating nutrient
rich soil in order to increase water absorption and retention.
3. Reduce Lawn Areas: When lawn areas are desired, we plant
native grass and other turf alternatives.
4. Use Appropriate Plants: We specify plants that are drought
tolerant, well adapted to Montana’s extreme temperatures, and
appropriate for our climate.
5. Efficient Irrigation: We have teamed with Hydrosystems KDI on
previous projects to deliver the most efficient irrigation system
possible.
6. Mulch: We understand the importance of mulching to reduce
water loss and evaporation.
7. Maintenance: We can provide seasonal maintenance plans to
improve water retention and irrigation efficiency.

80TH AVENUE MEDIANS
Arvada, Colorado
DHM worked with the City of Arvada to provide design services to renovate 1.25 miles
of median along 80th Avenue. The goal was to create a more sustainable landscape
by removing all existing bluegrass and replacing with drought tolerant plantings to
reduce water use and maintenance. The streetscape included sloped paving, specific
maintenance pull-offs, boulders and a variety of plant materials to provide year round
color and interest. Special attention was given to visibility triangles and sight lines
for safety of motorist. The City has adopted this project as their new standard for
streetscape medians.

THE MEADOWS STREETSCAPE
Meadows Parkway - Castle Rock, Colorado
DHM worked with the Town of Castle Rock, the Castle Rock Development Company and
the Meadows community to renovate the extensive entry medians and streetscape into
the Meadows community. We developed alternative concepts that we presented to the
community for input and ultimate selection. The community process also involved an
educational component to promote benefits of water efficiency, water budgets, value of
indigenous plants, energy conservation and safety. These included alternatives to reduce
large areas of irrigated turf while maintain a strong landscape statement at the entrance
into this large community. The final plan included removal of bluegrass sod, preservation of
existing trees, a new water efficient irrigation system and the incorporation of large planting
beds and alternate low water turf types. DHM worked closely with the Town grouping plants
into hydrozones and incorporating detailed irrigation budgets as part of the design. DHM
is a licensed professional registered in the Town of Castle Rock to perform design services.

MEADOWS STREETSCAPE RENOVATION
PURPOSE:
Reduce irrigation water usage in order to conform to the Town’s Master
Plan and water budgets, while creating a new “Meadows Aesthetic”. The
new “Meadows Aesthetic” will create a consistent usage of sustainable
plant materials and irrigation practices that meet the goal of the Town
and Meadows Master Plans for streetscapes, arterials and collectors. The
new landscape aesthetic will adhere to Castle Rock’s irrigation regulations,
water budgets and retain a visual character that identifies the Meadows
community.
APPROACH:
• Evaluate and replace existing irrigation system along
Meadows Parkway.
• Reduce average and peak water consumption. Design
irrigation systems with more efficient equipment, zoned for
specific plant types.
• Provide water-wise landscape and irrigation design for Meadows
Parkway- accounts 3411 and 3413. This area should be designed
in its entirety, including phasing to match available funding.
• Replace existing bluegrass lawn with short grass seed mix. These
grasses can be mowed on a regular basis to form a rougher, but
similar look to the traditional high water use turf.
• Replace turf in medians with short grass seed mix, ornamental
grasses, and shrubs. Select xeric plant material that will not
exceed an irrigation demand of 15”/ square foot per year. The
streetscape will also be enhanced by using perennials and xeric
annuals at the noses of islands and at street corners for added
seasonal color.
CRITERIA:
• In general the existing budget for irrigation water is 30 inches
per year. The proposed plan will reduce consumption to 15
inches per year or less.
• Water Budget for account 3411 (148,433 SF)= 4,805,000 gallons
• Actual Water Used for account 3411 = Proposed Water Usage for
account 3411 = 2,400,000 gallons
• Water Budget for account 3413 (77,507 SF) = 1,456,000 gallons
• Actual Water Used for account 3413
• Proposed Water Usage for account 3413 = 728,000 gallons

NOTABLE WORK
Carbondale Recreation – Xeric Demonstration Garden | Carbondale, Colorado
LEED Platinum Certification, January 2009
ASLA Merit Award for Design, 2009
ASLA Land Stewardship Award for Design, 2009
DHM completed a series of interpretive signs for the Carbondale Recreation Center
gardens. The garden demonstrates various plant communities found at different
elevations and scenarios throughout the Roaring Fork Valley, from the ponderosa pine
woodland to pinon-juniper woodland as well as three levels of xeric flower garden
plantings. Other water-saving features of the garden are identified and described, such
as strategies for stormwater management and the use of drought-tolerant turf grass.
Individual species are identified throughout with their associated water needs.
State Highway 133 Corridor Improvements | Carbondale, Colorado
DHM worked closely with the Town of Carbondale to implement the Town’s vision for the
improvements north of Main Street along both sides of SH 133 to the Roaring Fork River Bridge.
The Board of Trustees and the community invested significant time in discussing the design
direction for this corridor through both the Comprehensive Mater Plan and the PLT process,
and DHM Design helped take their vision and decisions forward. For the overall landscape
theme, the Town preferred pockets of landscaping at key locations such as intersections and
gateways, which provide ease of maintenance while achieving a high level of aesthetic design.
Early on DHM Design conducted an initial analysis of irrigation requirements for the corridor, so
that pump designs and other considerations for the irrigation system would adequately cover
the distance of the corridor from Main Street to the bridge. The maintenance requirements
were a critical consideration in the design process; close coordination with Town Public Works
Staff was vital for the long-term success of the project.
Basalt Community Campus | Basalt, Colorado
The mountain town of Basalt Colorado has been transformed in recent years through a public/ non-
profit partnership that achieves a number of long-standing social, environmental, economic and
community goals. In the heart of downtown, this redevelopment and trail project integrates two new
business campuses with public access to a new rivertrail, a community park, enhanced pedestrian
connections to the historic downtown, and new mixed use development that supports the downtown
growth goals. DHM was involved in all aspects of the process from overall visioning, community
meetings and design to coordination with engineers and federal agencies for proposed uses.
Bozeman North 7th Avenue | Bozeman, Montana
The active North 7th Avenue corridor is undergoing changes as Bozeman embraces a revitalized
“midtown” district centered around this corridor. DHM developed multiple studies and concept
designs for the planning and redevelopment of the North 7th Avenue in Bozeman, Montana.
3D comparison models were designed to show the existing, low density, mixed density, and
maximum density infills. DHM created figure ground diagrams that show the building massing
envelops, phased rendering diagrams, and eye level character views to better demonstrate the
corridor scale and feel.

Throughout Shara’s career she has successfully led and assisted in
the design, project management and construction management of
over 50 landscape and planning projects ranging in scale from public
facilities, high-end residential landscapes and native restoration
projects in the greater Rocky Mountain region.
NOTABLE WORK
Big Sky Lot 1 - Xeric Demonstration Garden | Big Sky, Montana
Lot 1, a prominent corner lot within the Big Sky Town Center, is well under construction
in Big Sky Montana this summer. We’re collaborating with Carney Logan Burke Architects
out of Jackson, WY on overall site design and construction administration for the retail/
office building and café. The site components include streetscape design, an urban
plaza with custom benches and an iconic fire sculpture by artist Elena Colombo, and
xeric demonstration gardens.
Bozeman Ponds Park | Bozeman, Montana
Shara was the lead designer for Bozeman Ponds Park, expanding the existing park as
part of the Bozeman Parks bond initiative. The Bozeman Pond Park expansion is the first
project to receive funding as part of the Bozeman Trails, Open Space and Parks (TOP)
bond initiative. The park is located in the fastest growing part of the city and provides
connectivity to the adjacent neighborhoods and ball fields with an extension of the
10’ wide trail from the south. The park program includes new soft surface trails, paved
trail, a 2.5 acre dog park, picnic shelters an outdoor classroom, parking lot, restroom
facility, native pasture grass area and natural playground. Several stakeholders and
nonprofit organizations (GVLT, Run Dog Run, HAVEN and the Optimus Club) have been
engaged in the project throughout the design process, which has greatly contributed
to its success. The project includes construction drawings, construction management
and City approvals.
State Highway 133 Corridor Improvements | Carbondale, Colorado
DHM worked closely with the Town of Carbondale to implement the Town’s vision for the
improvements north of Main Street along both sides of SH 133 to the Roaring Fork River
Bridge. The Board of Trustees and the community invested significant time in discussing
the design direction for this corridor through both the Comprehensive Mater Plan and
the PLT process, and DHM Design helped take their vision and decisions forward. For the
overall landscape theme, the Town preferred pockets of landscaping at key locations
such as intersections and gateways, which provide ease of maintenance while achieving
a high level of aesthetic design. Early on DHM Design conducted an initial analysis of
irrigation requirements for the corridor, so that pump designs and other considerations
for the irrigation system would adequately cover the distance of the corridor from Main
Street to the bridge. The maintenance requirements were a critical consideration in the
design process; close coordination with Town Public Works Staff was vital for the long-
term success of the project.
