Thank you for developing a holistic, well rounded strategic plan. What resonated for me personally is
Section 3: A Safe, Welcoming Community. Through both my professional and volunteer work, I interact
daily with individuals struggling with homelessness and other day-to-day challenges either due to or
exacerbated by mental health and substance abuse. As Bozeman continues to grow, it is vital that we offer
the care and services everyone needs to live independently and successfully so Bozeman can continue to
move forward as a community where all members are valued and have the ability to contribute. Having a
portion of the population that is struggling on a day to day basis, with mental health, addiction, or other
challenges, ultimately ends up costing money, resources, and can negatively impact neighborhoods and
community development. Let's make a proactive rather than reactive commitment to resolving areas
specifically around homelessness and substance abuse.
3.3 - A Friendly Community - I challenge Bozeman to "anticipate, celebrate, and incorporate an increasingly
diverse population" by considering welcoming refugees into its community. Bozeman is an incredibly
affluent, welcoming, and well-resourced community. As we watch millions of people across the world
struggle to find education and health care for their kids and communities where they can walk in the
streets safely without risk of death, rape, or abduction, I truly believe that Bozeman has the potential to
both provide a safe, welcoming space for refugees and benefit from the contributions they will bring a
community like ours. Refugees are innovators; they are resilient; they are entrepreneurs. For a growing and
developing community like Bozeman, one that is seeing astronomical shifts in its education, technology and
environmental sectors, welcoming fresh ideas into our community will only help us progress forward in an
increasingly global world.
I realize the state and national climate is not conducive to welcome refugees, but I believe that the refugee
program, established after WWII in response to the massive population displacements that took place as a
result of the war, will persevere. The refugee resettlement program is at the foundation of American - and
Montanan - ideals. It is the idea that you, as an individual, no matter what the trauma or hardship your past
life endured, have the opportunity to reinvent yourself into whoever you want to be. Let's give refugees a
chance to show Bozeman how they can help us continue to grow, learn and develop. Let's turn Bozeman
into one of the leading Montanan, Western, and National voices in support of this incredibly important and
historic program that represents the heartbeat of Americana.
Thank you,
City Of Bozeman
