Questions or Comments
Commissioners, you have asked for public comment on the proposed (one can assume by your past actions,
already decided upon) strategic plan. In a few words, aside from being poorly written, it is nothing but fluff
– full of buzz words like diversity and affordable and creative and innovative. But it totally ignores the
elephant in the room, which is cancerous growth. Even our rather short sighted local newspaper prints
from time to time references to what the critical challenge is in this place and time. Did you catch the item
recently (and several times previously) about how we are pushing against our supply of water even now.
For water awareness week, this Commission proposed as a solution conservation. Really? That’s all you
got? Does it not occur to you that inviting more people to our valley invites a water supply disaster?
Conservation is always a good idea, but a finger in the dyke will not solve the underlying problem: too many
people. More damns, more drilling, more stealing from other species and dwindling agriculture will only
exacerbate our on-going destruction of the local ecology. And it really doesn’t matter whether the people
live in the city or in the county or at the University, a sustainable environment and more people are
incompatible.
There is a simple solution, I think. As we approach the critical 50,000 residents mark, stop the issuance of
additional permits to build residences of any kind. No one has a legal right to move here or to any specific
place, no matter how much or how little money they have. Everyone who does live here should have the
right, however, to adequate water and clean air and, human or otherwise, to the continuance of their
species.
The City and County Commissioners are elected to represent the residents of this community and to lead
for their well-being. Please stop following the agenda of the narrowly educated business and building
sectors and make some significant planning decisions so that the people and critters and natural resources
of Bozeman and Gallatin County may have a healthy and peaceful future.
Thank you,
City Of Bozeman
