As a 45+ year resident and engaged community member both as a volunteer and politically, I love
Bozeman!
I want Bozeman to retain the " Bozeman feel" as we move to become a larger community. Part of this feel
is not just retaining places like the Western Cafe which hopefully will never become a tourist place, but
encouraging businesses that celebrate our local artists and food production.
We can easily become "anywhere USA" and I feel the approval of the " blah" high rises on Mendenhall was
rapidly taking us to that place.
Hotels like The Lark and restoration of The Rialto celebrate our unique culture without being " cute". The
restriction of Real Estate offices on Main Street was a great idea as we were rapidly becoming Jackson, WY
that could be a Disneyland for all of its lack of being "real".
We can't hold back the immigration but we certainly can guide it. Businesses like the Little Star Diner next
to The Lockhorn clustered together to what I hope will be a creative development whenever Empire
Builders sells its land next to the Library - that's the healthy Bozeman I want to see. ( The Community Food
Coop tried to buy Empire Builders 30 years ago when we moved from College St to Main but they were "
not ready yet".)
Nodes of like minded businesses and food stores for like minded neighborhoods. Lower income people
need good quality but inexpensive food. Just like parks , it is important to have food stores and pharmacies
nearby so people can walk or bike or take the bus to a very nearby stop to their home.
And above all, attention to conservation in the City of Bozeman whether lighting of night skies, water, air
pollution . This can be done through endless education of newcomers who are thrilled to live in a place so
much " better" than from where they moved. But we do not want a lower common standard of
expectation. Let's set a high standard.
Thank you,
City Of Bozeman
