The UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), is an initiative that has been adopted by almost all other nations, yet the U.S. is one of the few that has failed to do so. Taking a more grassroots approach to this problem has created a movement that has led cities and counties to pass ordinances of their own which adopt the actions defined in CEDAW. In the year 2018, gender equality should no longer be an issue-- yet, women and girls still find ourselves victims of wage discrimination, escalating rates of interpersonal violence and human sex trafficking and slavery, anti-reproductive rights measures, and other debilitating forms of oppression. Women are lacking appropriate political representation, as well as representation in positions of power. CEDAW is a reasonable response to all of these forms of discrimination and provides solutions in a comprehensive manner. Isn't it time the Bozeman City Commission express their respect for women by seriously considering passing CEDAW?
