Number the buildings and features to correlate with the Site Map. The Montana Historical and Architectural Inventory documents the date of construction for the residence located at 409 North Black Avenue as pre-1904.The inventory states: "This detached one- story single-family residence has a rectangular plan. The one-bay fagade is asymmetrical and consist of an off-center glass-paned front entrance with three sliding sash windows, all on one side of the door. The frame construction is finished in asbestos siding and the foundation is not visible. The gable roof is covered with grey asphalt shingles and features boxed eaves, and a central brick chimney,as well as a metal stovepipe. The axis of the roof is parallel to the street." Several changes and corrections to this description are noteworthy. First, the original plan is actually square. Also, since the inventory, two of the three windows described have been boarded and one window has been added to the other side of the front entrance. The chimney described in the inventory no longer exists. The Sanborn Maps help to tell the history of the site. The residence first shows up on the 1904 Sanborn Map.The footprint is notably setback further from the front property line than the other houses in the neighborhood and a fairly large shed is shown along the alley. The 1912 Sanborn Map shows the addition of a front porch. Note that the property address on the 1904 and 1912 Maps is 407 North Black Avenue whereas the address changes to 409 North Black Avenue on the 1927 version. The 1927 Sanborn Map does not show the large shed but does include a new small accessory structure in the northwest corner of the rear yard. The 1927-1943 Sanborn Map shows two accessory structures in the rear yard along the alley. The garage that exists on the site today appears to have been constructed post 1943. MONTANA HISTORIC PROPERTY RECORD PAGE Property Name: 409 North Black Avenue Site Number: HISTORY OF PROPERTY ❑ See Additional Information Page This residence is associated with the general residential aspect of the Civic Phase of Bozeman's historic/architectural development in the early 1900s. Deed research from the Gallatin County Clerk& Recorder's Office and the Polk Directories reveals some of the history of the property through ownership and occupant records. The earliest available property records indicate that WJ Beall sold the property to George H. Harrison in 1883. The next ownership information is from 1890 when John Bogert, Bozeman's first mayor who served for eight consecutive terms, purchased the land.Since John Bogert owned the property until his death in 1907, it is reasonable to assume that the house was constructed under his ownership. Note that the Polk Directories indicate that Bogert lived at 31 West Main Street; therefore, the residence at 409 North Black was likely one of several properties that Bogert owned and rented. Records indicate that Elizabeth Bogert, the sister of John Bogert, best known for establishing a local cemetery board and naming Sunset Hills, sold the residence to Warren W. Goodman in 1911. Mr.Goodman owned and resided on the property until 1919. Interestingly,Mr. Goodman is listed as a farmer in the 1911 Polk Directory and a lawyer in the next few available Polk Directories.
