To the City and County Commissioners:
I read with dismay and continuing confusion the recent editorial by Sheriff Gootkin regarding
the possibility that the city and the county are seeking the least efficient, least effective, and most expensive solution to the very critical need for new law enforcement facilities.
I’m at a loss to explain how anyone could believe that it would serve the public to eliminate
the shared costs, shared spaces, and, most importantly the resulting enhanced collaboration between city and county law enforcement personnel. Please review the costs and effects of
both plans very carefully—especially the long-term negative implications for public safety and future taxes by choosing not to cooperate. An honest look should make it clear to you that any
suggested benefit of separate projects would be superficial and short-term at best, dishonest at worst.
I have lived in the city and in the county for nearly 30 years and the safety and security in
Bozeman and Gallatin County are no accident. They are the result of two incredible, efficient and interactive law enforcement agencies. When the people responsible for law enforcement
tell me that working together keeps us safer, then I’d do everything in my power to facilitate this.
Thank you for your time.
Chris Boyer.
