Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features to
correlate with the Site Map.
The Montana Cadastral documents the date of construction for the residence located at 314 North
Black Avenue as 1902.This one-and-one-half story single-family residence has an axial plan
consisting of an offset front porch and entry door facing North Black Avenue with upper story 1/1
double-hung window and a ground level fixed window with the upper portion in stained glass. The
southern facade also includes a matching window with the upper portion in stained glass. The frame
construction is finished in clapboard and sits on a rubble, concrete, and brick foundations. The 1984
Historic Inventory described the front porch as being enclosed in glass, but has been since restored
to its presumably original state of being open with railings and spindlework. The primary roof forms
have a 12:12 roof pitch and are covered in asphalt shingles. The front porch is adorned with colorfully
painted Queen Anne style spindlework detailing and columns. The Sanborn maps also indicate a rear
porch in the southeast corner of the structure which has since been enclosed with framed walls and a
concrete foundation.
The Sanborn maps first show the residence in 1904 along with a shed on the alley. It is one of six
dwellings on the block which gradually becomes populated with additional dwellings through the first
half of the 20th century as seen in the subsequent Sanborn maps up to 1943. The 1927 Sanborn maps
show a garage was built just to the southeast of the primary residence. The front setback of the main
residence was consistent with the neighboring residences built on the block in the first half of the 20th
century.

NRHP Eligibility: ®Yes ❑No ❑ Individually ❑ Contributing to Historic District ❑Noncontributing to Historic District
NRHP Criteria: ❑A ❑ B ® C ❑D
Area of Significance: Period of Significance: Bozeman's Civic Phase
STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE ❑ See Additional Information Page
While it is stated that no significant historical information concerning persons or events
associated with the property were found, the 1984 Historic Inventory deemed the structure to have
significance as a "contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association
with the residential aspect of the Civic Phase of Bozeman's historic architectural development".
The conclusion drawn in 1984 continues to hold true in that the building stands as a modest
example of residential architecture which embodies characteristics of Bozeman's Civic Phase and
is an example of the type of construction seen in homes on the north side of Bozeman.
INTEGRITY(location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association) ❑ See Additional Information Page
The 1984 Historic Inventory determined that the property did not retain its historic integrity due to
alterations of the original design and materials. Since then, the property has had some areas of
renovation. The building's continuity of use, setting, and location contribute to the building's
historic integrity.
