Setting & Location
The Chemistry Modular Building is located immediately north of the Chemistry & Biochemistry Building. Its east end sits
approximately 25’ from the north end of the larger building’s north/south wing. Langford Hall and the Johnson Center are
located to the north across Harrison Street and parking lots and open space are found to the east and west. Two
temporary trailers were added immediately to the north sometime after 2008 and are oriented perpendicular to east / west
Chemistry Modular Building.
Chemistry Modular Building
The Chemistry Modular Building, designed by the Bozeman architectural firm of Dowling Sandholm, was erected in 2008
by BNBuilders Inc. as part of the Gaines Hall renovation project. It consists of two rectilinear buildings (Chemistry Modular
North and Chemistry Modular South) connected by a partially-covered breezeway. The approximately 35’ wide structures
are aligned on their west elevation, but Chemistry Modular North extends an additional 20’ past the 106’ long Chemistry
Modular South on their east elevation. Each building has an asphalt shingle-clad shed roof with boxed eaves that slopes
downward from their inner elevation. The roofs overhang slightly on the side and outer elevations, but extend significantly
over the inner elevations and into the breezeway where they are connected by series of closely-spaced triangular trusses.
Solid gable trusses are found on the east and west ends of the breezeway. A concrete walk flanked by gravel runs
through the center of the breezeway. Each entrance on the interior elevations sports its own concrete path from the
central walk. The Chemistry Modular Building is clad in a synthetic sage-colored siding that mimics wide clapboard. Dark
green trim is found at building corners and around all windows and doors. The boxed eaves are also dark green.
Fenestration is limited to the north and south outer elevations and the inner elevations facing the breezeway. All
entrances are located off the breezeway, with Chemistry Modular North containing five entrances and four windows and
Chemistry Modular South having three entrances and four windows. The former are arranged around a central entrance
flanked by a single window, paired entrances and another window, while the latter displays paired windows on its west
end followed by a door, a window, paired doors and a window. On the outer elevations, Chemistry Modular North
contains nine windows and Chemistry Modular South has seven windows. All windows are one-over-one, double-hung
vinyl units.
Associated Trailers
The two trailers located north of the Chemistry Modular Building are clad in white vertical siding with limited beige trim. On
their outer elevations, both trailers have elevated entrances on each end, with the east trailer also having two windows
just inside the doors. HVAC units are attached to the north and south ends of both trailers.

STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE
The Chemistry Modular Building is not eligible for listing individually or as part of a district due to age and lack of historical
or architectural significance. Plans for the building’s removal are already in place, and it seems unlikely the building will
reach the 50-year mark required for eligibility.

Integrity
Property Name: Chemistry Modular Building Site Number: Error! Reference source not found.
INTEGRITY (location, design, setting, materials, workmanship, feeling, association)
Due to its recent age, the Chemistry Modular Building retains excellent integrity of design, materials and workmanship. It
also retains its integrity of location and setting immediately behind the Chemistry and Biochemistry Building. However, the
building lacks the necessary age and significance to qualify for listing in the National Register.
