Dear Robin, I would be grateful for this message to be forwarded to Mayor Andrew and the
Commissioners. Thank you. JM

Dear Mayor Andrus and City Commissioners,
During the 13 years I’ve lived in the Gallatin Valley, I have somehow missed the discussionson geothermal energy potential in the SW Montana. As a lay person, all I have is questions at
this point; others may have the same questions. A lot has been invested in alternative sourcesof energy in Montana, primarily wind, solar and hydro. It would put my mind at ease to know
that geothermal generation in this region has also been included in the analysis of strategicenergy supplies. If it has been ruled out, it would be useful for valley citizens to know why
and for how long.
During the 15 years I lived in Kenya, about 16% of that country’s electricity supply wasgenerated by just one geothermal generating plant. It was built by the Japanese and is located
to take advantage of a small fraction of the subsurface heat along the Rift Valley. Judgingfrom its numerous geothermal features, SW Montana may have similar potential.
I have attached to this note a link to an article on an Asia Development Bank-funded
geothermal project proposed for Indonesia. Apart from the obviously different context, thearticle provides some information on costs and output that may be of interest here. Some of
the funding mechanisms may also be of interest to Montana for our own forward planning.
