PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance,
noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features.
This detached two-story single-family residence has a rectangular plan with
a recessed arched entrance in a front-facing gable bay extension. The
two-bay facade is asymmetrical and consists of the offset front entrance
with fixed and 3/1 double-hung windows. The frame construction is finished
in shingles and rests on a concrete foundation. The gable roof is covered
with asphalt shingles and features two metal stovepipes and an addition on
the west end. There is a shed-roofed wall dormer adjoining the gable intersect
in front.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site
and surrounding area lend the property significance.
This property was- built for Deane B. Swingle, a professor of botany and
bacteriology at Montana State College from 1906-1943. He also served as Dean of
Science from 1932-33 and 1941-43 and vice-president of the college from 1941-43.
This structure qualifies as a contributing element within a potential historic
district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Nationali-
zation Phase of Bozeman 's historic/architectural development.
