PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance,
noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features.
This one-and-one-half story single-family residence has a rectangular
plan with an open shed-roofed front porch and gable-roofed side addition
connected with the garage. There is also a gable-roofed extension in the
back. The one-bay facade is asymmetrical and consists of an offset paneled
front entrance with four-paned casement windows on one side and two-paned
casement windows on the upper story. The porch has a wood parapet and the
roof is supported by four wood posts. The frame construction is finished
in shiplap and rests on a concrete foundation. The gable roof is covered
with brown asphalt shingles and features boxed, overhanging eaves and one
offset, brick exterior chimney. The axis of the roof is perpendicular
to the street. Additions include the garage and connecting room.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site
and surrounding area lend the property significance.
This property was built by the Kopp brothers for John Kopp. Kopp brothers
were early arrivals in Bozeman and eventually- were quite successful in the
butchery and meat market business. On his return to Bozeman, John I:opp
built for himself a large house in 1903 at _502 South Grand. 1:e sold this
property two years after the building of the house, moving to Seattle and
Astona, Portland when he was engaged in brewery business. Two years after
the building of this house, he retired to Portland.
Significance: This structure qualifires as a contributing element within a
potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect
of the Village Phase of Bozeman's historic/architectural development.
