PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance, noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials. Discuss significant architectural features. This one-and-one-half story single-family residence has a rectangular plan with a gable-roofed addition to the side. The two-bay facade is asymmetrical and consists of an offset glass-paned front entrance inside the addition, with two double-hung windows of a 2/2 sash arrangement on each side of a corner of the main facade. There is also one 2/2 window in the center of the second level . The frame construction is finished in asbestos siding and rests on a concrete foundation. The gable roof is covered with reddish asphalt shingles and features boxed, overhanging eaves. There are two central brick chimneys. The axis of the roof is perpendicular to the street. Outbuildings include a garage of shipboard siding. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site and surrounding area lend the property significance. This property is significant because this residence is associated with a person important in Bozeman history, Emil Ketterer. Ketterer, an emigrant from Germany, came to Bozeman in 1878 to set up his blacksmith trade. His business increased and his was the largest blacksmith and carriage shop in operation. Kis brother-in-law, Louis I:rueger, a businessman, lived across the street at 317 North Bozeman. Together they built a larger home in 1901 for Ketter at 35 North Grand (on the I.R. ) . There the Ketterer family resided until the late- 1960s. Significance: This structure qualifies as a contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Village Phase of Bozeman ' s historic/architectural development. INTEGRITY. Assess the degree to which the structurelsite,and surrounding area accurately convey the historical associations of the property. The historic integrity of this property has been retained due to survival of continuity of use, setting and location.
