PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance, noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features. This detached one-and-one-half story single-family residence has a rectangular plan with a bracketed gable overdoor. The one-bay facade is symmetrical and consists of a central front entrance with 1/1 double-hung windows. The frame construction is finished in 6" bevel siding and the gable roof is covered with roofing tile. There is a dormer to the rear and a central brick chimney. The axis of the roof is parallel to the street. A shed roof addition has been added to the rear. Outbuildings include a shed, HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site and surrounding area lend the property significance. This property was the residence of Dr. George Washington Monroe, a physician in early Bozeman_ Born in Virginia in 1837, he graduated from Louisiana University in medicine in 1859 and moved to Bozeman in 1872. He served as superintendent of public instruction for Gallatin County in 1876-1882, elected Bozeman mayor in 1886 and U.S. land office registrar that same year. In 1890, he moved to Butte. This structure is potentially eligible for the National Register because of its historical associations and because of Its architectural integrity of materials, location, setting, design and use. INTEGRITY., Assess the degree to which the structure/site,and surrounding area accurately convey the historical associations of the property. The historic integrity of this property has been retained due to the survival of original design and materials and continuity of use, setting and location.
