PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance,
noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features.
This detached one-and-one-half story single-family residence has a rectangular
plan and has been converted to a commercial structure. There is a recessed
corner porch and a hipped roof addition to the rear. The one-bay facade is
asymmetrical and consists of an offset front entrance with fixed windows with
leaded glass transoms, and 1/1 double-hung windows. The brick construction is
covered with vertical wood siding and shiplap in the gable ends. The cross-
axial gable roof is covered with green asphalt shingles and features continuous
returning eaves and a central brick chimney and metal stovepipe. The axis of the
main roof is perpendicular to the street. Outbuildings include three sheds ,
one of drop siding attached, one of wood with a shallow gable, and one of
asbestos shingles with a gambrel roof.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site
and surrounding area lend the property significance.
This property is significant because it is associated with a person important
to Bozeman history, James D. McCamman. McCamman settled in the Bozeman area
in 1865. He was appointed Gallatin County Treasurer in 1875 and was elected
County Clerk later that year. He also engaged in sheep raising and money
loaning. He was the first secretary and treasurer of the Gallatin County
Pioneer Society in 1894. McCamman's residence in noted in Matt Alderson's
Tour of Bozeman. In 1902, McCamman built another residence at 601 West Main.
This structure is an intrusive element within a potential his+nrir district.
