This detached one-and-one-half story single-family residence has an ell-shaped
plan with an enclosed front entry and a projecting gable roof beyond the entry
over the steps. The two-bay facade is asymmetrical and consists .of an offset
front entrance with fixed, casement and double-hung windows, some with shutters.
The frame construction is finished in asbestos and rests on a concrete founda-
tion. Th a roof is covered with •brown-gold asphalt shingles and features
dormers. a two central brick chimneys. Outbuildings include a garage.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site
and surrounding area lend the property significance.
This property is significant because the residence is associated with a
person important in Bozeman history, Charles P. Blakeley. Blakeley was
born in- 1834, followed the 1864 gold strikes in Plontana and settled in
Bozeman permanently in 1878. He held many elected and appointive offices,
including Gallatin County Sheriff and several terms as State Legislature
Representative. In 1894, he was appointed by President Cleveland as
R strar of the U.S. Land Office in Bozeman. He resided in this house
f more than 30 years.
