Matt_ Cot,(Un 218 Lindley Vi aCe Revision 1985 H ls7 and: Though covered by asbestos shingle sheathing, this vernacular, gable front house appears to retain all of its considerable Queen Anne style detailing. The very ornate porch is especially noteworthy, for it is one of the few elaborate examples of Queen Anne style ornamentation in Bozeman. Varieated shinglework probably remains intact beneath the asbestos shingles as well. Previous deed research suggest that Augustine and Minnie McNeal, along with George Behringer, became the first owners of this site in 1886. Neither name appears in the 1892 city directory, though this house appears on the 1890 Sanborn Map. From at least as early as 1900, Charles A. Backes, who settled in Montana in 1892 from New York, lived here and remained until his death some time in the 1920's. Backes was a saloon keeper in the 1890's a grocer by 1900, and a farmer and rancher by 1910. He served as a city alderman in 1904. The sidewalk, which was paved in 1906, bears the name Charles Backes in front of the house. Backes' wife, Christine Backes, lived here until about 1934, following the death of her husband. The house stood vacant in 1935, and by 1940, Bert Christie, a laborer, was living here. Christie later built 216 Lindley in 1947. Bibliography Application for Sewer Connection: Oct. 17, 1911, C.A.
