Tracy This unusual house is one of the few in Bozeman remaining from the 1870's , and was built as part of a pair, along with 209 S. Tracy, which still stands next to it. This house was , as shown in an 1885 etching, originally identical to that ornate stick style house, before being remodeled around 1930. That remodeling involved simplification of ornament, covering the walls with stucco, and the addition of the present entry porch. The two cottages were built in 1879 for rental by Samuel W. Lewis , a black barber who settled in Bozeman in 1868. The Avant Courier noted in November, 1878: "Samuel W. Lewis is having cellars dug and other work done preparatory to building two neat cottages on Templar Ave. , nearly opposite the residence of Dr. G. W. Monroe. " The 1872 Bird's Eye view shows two similar pair of cottages on the same side of this street, though closer to Main Street (probably between Babcock and Olive) . Lewis' pair may therefore have been merely a continuation of a pattern already established. They must have been of special note, however, for Leeson' s History of Montana, 1885, contains an etching of the cottages. Lewis himself lived on S. Bozeman Ave. The earliest known resident of this house if Thomas H. Rea, at the turn of the century, who ran Rea' s Grocery at 11 E. Main. Belle Cameron lived here around 1910 through 1912, and possibly much longer. Cameron was a "domestic" (maid) at 22 W. Story. In 1927 the house was listed as vacant. Later occupants include Arthur E. Zion, a truck driver for the Nash-Finch Co. , and Robert B. Bucklin, a student. Both lived here at different times in the 1930' s. Bibliography Application for Sewer Connection, "207 and 211 S.
