Tracy This simple tri-gabled, "upright and wing" displays traces of the Italianate style, such as the high relief; peaked lintel boards, and is one of the few houses dating from so early a period. The house is representative of the building boom triggered by the arrival of the Northern Pacific Railroad in 1883. Nelson Catlin, the original owner, was a carpenter from Minnesota who settled in Bozeman in 1872, and probably built the house himself. As noted in the newspaper, the house cost $3500 when built. After the turn of the century, John B. Nelson, a farmer, occupied the house, with his wife, Sybilla. Sybilla Nelson continued to live here after the death of her husband around 1915, along with various boarders , for several years. The present porch is probably an early 20th century addition. The house is well preserved, with the exception of the asbestos shingle siding. Bibliography Avant Courier, December 29,- 1881, p.7 Application for Sewer Connection, October 27, 1913, Mrs. S. Nelson.
