PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance,
noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features.
This two-story single-family residence has a greek cross plan with ,an open
front porch in the front angle that is covered with an extension of the
main gable roof. The three bay facade is asymmetrical and consists of an
offset side-facing entrance with .9/1 and 2/2 double-hung windows of colored
glass accents. The window on the side of the house is formed with high
arches of glass. The brick construction rests on a rubble stone foundation
and features a shingled addition, and enclosed vestibule with shiplap siding,
and a storage shed attached to the rear of the house. The brick has been
sandblasted. The gable roof is covered with green asphalt shingles and
features a shed dormer in back. There are four brick chimneys. The garage
was a later addition.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,Important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structurelslte
and surrounding area lend the property significance.
This property is significant because this residence is associated with a
person important to Bozeman history, Robert P. Vivian. Arriving in Montana
in 1864, Vivian, a lawyer, was a member of the two legislative assemblies
of 1872 and 1873. He served in Gallatin County as District Attorney for
four years. Vivian built this residence for himself in 1884 and lived here
until his death in the early 1890's.
This structure qualifies as a contributing element within a potential historic
district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Civic
Phase of Bozeman's historic/architectural development.
