308 S. Tracy
One of the oldest houses remaining in Bozeman, this house attests to the
! early settlement of this street. It is a very simple, well-preserved
example of the I-House building- type typical of the earliest residential
structures in town, and was built by Richard McDonald, a freed slave who
came to Montana in 186.4. By some accounts, the house was built from scrap
materials found in the town - a possibility, since 1872, the approximate
date of the house; was an active year for construction. By 1900, Mary
McDonald, Richard McDonald' s widow, lived here alone. She remained
until 1941, after which time Belle McDonald was listed as the resident,
The house remains in the same family today.
Part of the house extends over the south property line, which presents a.
potential future threat of demolition, should the house ever become
abondoned.
