416 S. Tracy
An excellent example of a vernacular Queen Anne style pattern book
design, this house is one of a group of three virtually identical
houses (412 and 420 S. Tracy being the others) . All built by local
carpenter, John A. Bartholomew, the design seems to have clearly
been derived from "House Design No. 1096" in Fred T. Hodgson's turn-
of-the-century mail order house pattern catalog. The house is well-
preserved, with the exception of the siding. (See appendix) .
There are other houses in the city of nearly identical design as well .
Bartholomew's brother, Elmer Bartholomew, was an especially notable
and prolific early 20th century builder in Bozeman.
The original owner of this house was probably John Frank Metheney,
variously listed as "rodman" and "Street Commissioner" in the city
directories. Metheney lived here from about 1910 and on into the
1940' s. During the 1930' s and 1940' s, he and his wife lived here
along with boarders.
