516 S. Tracy
One of three identical school buildings designed by Fred F. Willson
and built in 1939 with WPA financial assistance, the Longfellow School
is the only one of the three that has been spared major alteration to
the entrances. The schools represent an ambitious modernization of
the school system physical plant undertaken during the Depression.
Each replaced an impressive late 19-th' or early 20th brick school , all
of diverse designs .
The original Longfellow School on this site was a 2-story, "H" plan,
hip-roofed brick structure with recessed bays, and a stone portico
enclosing the entrance. In contrast to that one, this school , which
bears traces of the Art Deco style, is of only moderate architectural
significance. In concept however, the school was considered quite
progressive when built. A 1942 Chamber of Commerce brochure describes
the then-new schools as " . . .modern teaching units, providing for each
classroom an additional project room where the students carry on
handwork, build and exibit displays and otherwise train their hands
to carry out the plans their heads conceive. Each of the schools is
also provided with a combination gymnasium-auditorium. "
