Once one of the most impressive historic houses in Bozeman - and of
special note when built - this large Shingle style house is now nqn-
contributing due to enclosure of the full front porch, and the incor
poration of it into the interior living space. The ornate upper
floor nevertheless remains in original condition. The house was
built by John A. Luce - a prominent lawyer, judge, and one-time
Bozeman mayor - in about 1892. - ,
Luce, who is listed as residing at this approximate location in the
1892 City Directory, settled in Montana in 1882, from Washington, D.C.
By 1900 he was a partner in the firm "Luce & Luce," with his father,
L.A. Luce (see 307 S. Black) . In 1916 he was mayor. Luce may have
moved out of this house in 1918. The Weekly Courier on August 28 of that year
noted that, "Judge Luce has purchased the residence of John Tilton on
Black Street. He will at once erect an addition to the residence and
remove there the coming month. " The article may have been referring
to L.A. Luce. By 1927 the Delta Tau Fraternity occupied this house.
The house has various residents and periods of vacancy through
the 1930' s and 1940' s.
