HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons, important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structurelsite
and surrounding area lend the property significance.
This property is significant because this residence is associated with persons
important in Bozeman history. When early resident Lewis J. P. Morrill built
his home in 1879, it was described as large and imposing on the south edge of
town. Three years later, Charles 11. Cobb bought the house from Morrill.
Cobb, an organizer of the Bozeman National Bank, also had coal mine intents.
This structure is potentially eligible for the National Register because
of its historical associations and because of its architectural integrity
of materials, location, setting , design and use.

property.
The historic integrity of this property has been retained due to the survival
of original design and materials and continuity of use, setting and location.

tion.

401 S. Black
This very well-preserved house is one of the few that remain in
Bozeman from the 1870' s. Although it is a simple, vernacular house
with only very slight Italianate style detailing, when built it was
touted as being large and imposing. The Avant Courier reported of
this house on October 13, 1879: "'L.J.P. Morrill s new residence
is fast approaching completion. It is the largest and most imposing
structure on Black Street, and will be a valuable and attractive
addition to that part of our beautiful town.. Mr. Morrill is also
entitled to the credit of having made better time in house
building than any other person who has heretofore attempted that
difficult and vexatious task in Bozeman. " Morrill is not listed
in the 1892-3 city directory.
Perhaps the next resident was Walter W. Livingston, who lived here
# previous to building his own Colonial Revival style house next door
at 327 S. Black.
