Black directly across the street, but of reverse plan, this house (as well as 430 S. Black) was built by local carpenter, John A. Bartholomew. The two ornate Bungalow style houses bear the subtle, yat= unmistakable characteristics of Bartholomew' s style, and are very important elements in the district. Only the porch rail appears to have been altered on this otherwise very well-preserved house. The high integrity of this house increases its significance, since 430 S. Black has undergone more substantial alteration. Like most of Bartholomew's designs, this one appears to have been strongly influenced by a pattern in Hodgson's house pattern catalog, in this case, "House Design No. 3004" (see appendix) . Bibliography Application for Water Service, 425 S. Black, John Bartholomew, Dec. 15, 1910. City Directories verify that Bartholomew never lived here.
