One of the finest examples of the Bungalow/Craftsman style in
Bozeman, this house is by far the most significant of the numerous
houses built by local carpenter, ,John A. Bartholomew - one of Bozeman's
most important early 20th century builders - Bartholomew built this
house for himself, and apparently spared no motif in his repertoir.
The porch, supported by massive cobblestone piers , and the variety of
surface textures, are outstanding features. The design appears to
have been derived from Hodgson's turn-of-the-century mail order house pattern
catalog: Practical Bungalows and Cottages for Town and Country, from
which Bartholomew apparently drew other designs for houses in this
district. This one is very similar to "House Design No. 2105 in that
catalog (see appendix) .
