The full front porch of this house has unfortunately been completely
enclosed. Judging from the portions of the original design that
remain, it is clear that this was originally a building of high
architectural significance. The building is one of the numerous houses
in the district built by local early 20th century builder, John A.
Bartholomew, and bears the subtle yet unmistakable characteristics of
his style.
Austin 0. DeFrate, a clerk, and his wife, Frances DeFrate, were
probably the last to live here before the house was converted to a
grocery store in 1930. Harry L. and Eva B. Gustine were the first
owners of the store here, and lived above it in the same building.
By 1940, Harlie H. Wilson was running the store, then called "Corner
Grocery. " In 1953, Mr. & Mrs. Cliff Cullen took over the market, and
named it "Cullen' s Corner Market" . The Cullen's ran the store until
1974, when this last of the old corner markets in Bozeman closed and
again became a house. The paved front lawn is today the only indication
of this building' s former use.
