This attached two-and-one-half story commercial structure has a square plan with with a corner-cut diagonal front entrance with corner column support and a marbelized area surrounding the central entrance. The asymmetrical facade consists of two front entrances with aluminum storefront windows on the f.;rst floor and modern 1/1 double-hung windows on the second floor under a projected upper facade. The upper facade has no windows but could possibly cover storage area. The contruction is finished in epoxy stucco and rests on a foundation that is not visible. The flat built-up roof lies parallel to the street. Remodeling obscures all original detailing except for date stone at the top of the cornice on the east side. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site and surrounding area lend the property significance. This property is significant because it is associated with a person important to Bozeman history, William W. Alderson. Alderson, born in England in 1831, was one of the first settlers in Bozeman in the summer of 1864. Homesteading isouth of the original plat, Alderson was instrumental in the town's founding and development. In 1879, Alderson purchased the Avant-Courier from Joseph Wright who had begun the paper in 1870. That same year of his purchase, Alderson built a single story brick building In- intent to house his newspaper. Two years later in 1881, the second story was added. When it was first built, a grocery store and post office occupied the ground floor, the newspaper office was located on the second and the printing office at the rear. Alderson edited the paper until his death in 1906. This structure is ,a -neutral element within a potential historic district.
