PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance,
noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features.
This attached two-story commercial structure has a square plan with an oval-ended
metal overhang across the street level . The facade is symmetrical and consists
of a central entrance with storefront windows. The second story has no windows
but features a brick corbeled band of arches just below the cornice and a diamond
pattern of white brick below the corbelling. The brick construction has been
covered with epoxy stone panels obscuring the original facade. The roof is flat
with built=up materials.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site
and surrounding area lend the property significance.
This property is significant because of its association-_with -a_person important -
to Bozeman -, General Lester S. Willson. After serving in the Civil Mar under
General Sherman, Willson came west to Bozeman in 1867 and joined a mercantile
firm of Tuller and Rich that had been established the previous year.
Willson purchased the interest of Tuller and the firm became Rick and Willson.
In 1876, Willson occupied the entire control and operated it under his name.
In 1893 the firm incorporated under the name of the Willson Company with
Willson as president , Fred A. Fielding, Vice-president (and for whom Willson
named his son) , and H.. A. Freeding, secretary and treasurer. Willson's son
Fred F. Willson was a noted architect in Bozeman. When General Willson died
in 1919, Central Avenue was renamed in his honor. Willson had lived at
504 South Willson since 1886.
This structure is an intrusive element within a potential historic district.
