Concisely, accurately, and completely describe the property and alterations with dates. Number the buildings and features
to correlate with the Site Map.
The building is a one-story commercial structure, constructed of brick, concrete block, and metal frame glass windows.
Façade wall on south angles from west wall and is not square to front edge of building at roof line. Original design of
façade has brick pattern at left end consisting of columns of stacked stretchers and headers. Present surface treatment of
building includes painted bricks, and corrugated metal siding above awnings. Window sills formed by vertical header
bricks. Large fixed windows are slanted inward at base. Original façade designed with one large window and door near
southwest corner of building and five (5) large windows to the east of the door. Projection above covered walkway
originally supported by one pier at southwest corner and projection of east wall at southeast corner. Presently front façade
has additional door entry on right and the addition of another central pier to support projection. Recent remodeling of
façade has metal cladding to columns, corrugated metal siding to face of projection, and projected awning of standing
seam metal. West wall appears as originally designed and constructed with five recessed panels of concrete block
separated by concrete piers. Concrete block panels are topped with areas of glass block and atop that is concrete block.
Stacked courses of brick are made of individual bricks measuring 12 inches by 1-1/2 inches. West wall is capped with
flanged terra-cotta coping tiles. East wall of building projects 15 feet south of south wall of adjoining building to the east
(125 W Mendenhall St). South portion of east wall is made of bricks in three columns of stacked pattern separated by
columns of stacked headers.

The existing building was originally designed by Fred Willson in June 1952. The building was designed for the Thompson
Brothers as a retail flooring store. The architectural drawing indicated that a frame dwelling existed on his lot prior to
construction of the existing building. The 1954 Polk City Directory for Bozeman (pg. 211) lists the first entry for the
Thompson Brothers Floor Coverings business at 135 W. Mendenhall St. The immediately previous City Directory for 1950
shows the occupants of the residence at 135 W. Mendenhall St. occupied by Charles D. Bradford.

The building is a relatively intact example of the architectural design work for Bozeman's commercial buildings by Fred
Willson. The building represents broad understanding of local Bozeman and southwest Montana's regional history of post-
World War II commercial expansion and development. The property is also a prime example of Willson's later design work
in Bozeman, hence representing a significant person in Bozeman's history. Also, the building, although subjected to some
architectural changes, represents a high level of workmanship to realize Willson's plans, representing the level of
construction execution in Bozeman during the mid-20th century. The building is a fine example of Willson's mid-20th
century design ideas, within the context of the full-range of Willson buildings in Bozeman.

Although the building has undergone some changes, the property retains elements of historic materials, workmanship,
design, setting, workmanship, feeling and association to justify a recommendation for defining the property as a an
individual property or contributing element of a potential historic district typifying Bozeman's commercial developments
during the Postwar Expansion Phase. Although some alterations to the original design and materials have occurred since
the date of original construction, most exterior changes have been undertaken in a manner that they are reversible, thus
allowing future restoration. Most of the subsequent changes to the exterior have been carried out in a sympathetic
manner to the original design and materials.
