Revision 1985
Very well preserved, with the exception of the non-contributing, enclosed entry
vestibule, the Work House is an excellent example of a vernacular, late 19th
century brick residence. Especially notable is the corbelled, recessed central
bay in the first floor of the gable front, and the shingled gables, which are
defined by horizontal cornices. The house appears to be the work of either
A.J. Svorkmoe or O.J. Moe, two local builders who built several similar brick
houses in the district in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
The house was originally occupied by the John F. Work, who was listed as living
here in the city directories of 1892 through 1910-11, and described variously
as a stockman and sheep breeder. Work settled in Bozeman in 1865 form Missouri.
In the 1912-13 directory, Work's widow, Vida M. Work, is listed at this address.
In the next available directory, 1916-17, the name Work is not listed.
The house occupies a prominant corner lot.
