PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance,
noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials. Discuss significant architectural features.
This detached two-story single=family residence has a rectangular plan with
projecting front and side bays , and a hipped porch supported by turned wood
posts , and a wooden frieze to one side. The one-bay facade is asymmetrical
and consists of an offset front entrance with fixed leaded glass windows.
Distinctive features include a crescent-shaped window on the front-facing
gable end. The frame construction is finished in metal siding and rests on
a concrete foundation. The gable-on-hip roof is covered with asphalt shingles
and lies perpendicular to the street.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site
and surrounding area lend the property significance.
E.B. Gifford was a Bozeman carpenter who came to Montana from New York.
Significance: This structure qualifies as a contributing element within a
potential historic district due to its associations with the residential aspect
of the Civic Phase of Bozeman' s historic/architectural development.

Built by Elihu B. Gifford, a carpenter who settled in Bozeman in 1882 from New
York, this fine example of a large, vernacular Queen Anne style house is typical
of the caliber of architecture found in the district. Gifford had previously
lived on S. Willson Avenue (then named S. Central Avenue) until moving here
sometime after 1892. In 1900 he built 216 S. Grand, and lived there for only
about two years, before moving to Seattle. By 1902, James White was living
in this house. The house remains well preserved, with the exception of the
replacement siding.
