Matt Cohen 420 S. Grand
Revision 1985
This unique, 1-story, brick, Queen Anne style cottage was
built in 1900 by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Alderson. Probably
a relative of both William W. Alderson - founder of the
Avant Courier newspaper - and Matt Alderson (see 319 S. Willson)
- William Alderson's son. Frank Alderson was the treasurer
of the Avant Courier Publishing Co. at the beginning of
this century. This house is the smallest of a group of
four very impressive houses that stand on all four corner
lost of this intersection of South Grand Avenue and Story
Street. The house retains high integrity, with the exception
of the flagstone sheathing of the tower roof.
By 1910 John W. Yergey, of the Yergey & Yergey Real Estate
and Insurance Company, was living here. His partner and
probably brother, Alfred L. Yergey, who had previously lived
at 521 S. Grand, lived here in the 1930's.
In 1940, Charles C. Francisco, a plumber, was the occupant,
while in 1942, Alonzo Shook, a rancher, had taken over the
house. There is no evidence to support information in Brister Is
walking tour brochure that Nelson Story's granddaughter
once lived here after marrying Douglas Drysdale, after which
time the house was known as "Honeymoon Cottage".
