HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,imp,)-tant events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structurelsite and surrounding area lend the property significance. 1 i This property was built for Kate Calvin, a teacher of music at Montana State College from 1894-1904. Matt Cohen Revision 1985 Miss Kate Calvin built both this house and the one next to it, 609 S. Grand, on what was one large lot, in 1901. The Avant Courier in June of that year noted that construction was proceeding on Calvin' s new large residence, which would be "hand- some" and "modern" when completed. The article probably referred to this house, the larger of the two. Unfortunately, substantial alterations decreased the archi- tectural significance of this unusual house.
