Noble ,UCH STREET PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance, noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features. This detached two-story single-family residence has an L-shaped plan which is unaltered. The house is in excellent shape and in original form. The porch is a wrap-around with groups of 2-3 pilasters supporting the hip roof. The railing is enclosed. The side porch has round columns. The one-bay facade is asymmetrical and consists of an offset glass-paned front entrance with double-hung windows with a 1/1 sash arrangement. There are a few leaded glass fixed windows on the second story. The frame construction is finished in 3" beveled siding with corner trim on the exterior. It rests on a cut stone foundation. The cross- gable roof is covered with rust colored asbestos shingles and features box cornices and one central brick chimney. The axis of the roof is perpendicular to the street. The outbuildings include an attached rear garage. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structurelsite and surrounding area lend the property significance. i This property was built for and by Thovias Noble, a partner in the Kenyon-Noble Lumber Company, that continues under tEe same name today. Thomas Noble was born in 1857 in the midwest, came to Salesville (Gallatin Gateway) in 1882 as a logger. Some years later he moved into Bozeman, building first at 316 South Third and in 1903, across the street at 311 South Third. He joined j Squire C. Kenyon as a partner and in 1906 the firm incorporated under the name Kenyon-Noble. Noble died in 1933. A daughter continues to live in the home at 311 South Third. Matt Cohen 311 S. Third { Revision 1985 t ' This tri-gabled vernacular house is exceptionally well preserved. The house appears on the 1904 Sanborn Map without the present wrap-around porch. The earliest listing for the house is from 1904-5, when Thomas E. Noble, yard mana- ger at the S.C. Kenyon Co. was living here, with Joseph Machemer, a painter and Melvin Machemer, a carpenter, as boarders. i In 1906, the Kenyon-Noble Lumber Co. , which still operates today, was incor- porated with Thomas E.
