PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance,
noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features.
This detached one-and-one-half story duplex has an L-shaped plan with
a recessed corner entrance porch on the far facade and a bay window
with balcony accessing the second floor window on the nearest facade.
Windows in the structure are 2/2 double-hung. The frame construction
is finished in horizontal siding and sits on a concrete foundation ,
with the porch base and steps of flagstone. The gable roof is covered
with asphalt shingles , has a central brick chimney, and the main body
of which lies parallel to the street.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site
and surrounding area lend the property significance.
This property was built for Lewis Sperling, an early Bozeman merchant.
Born in Poland in 1836, he emigranted to New York in 1857. He moved
to Bozeman in 1867, establishing a dry goods shop with his brother-in-law,
Strasburger.
This structure qualifies as a contributing element within a potential historic
district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Vil lage
Phase of Bozeman 's historic/architectural development.
