King,- 1-904 PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance, noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features. This detached two-story multi-family residence has a basic rectangular design with several small additions changing the original form ald detail- ing. The front entrance is protected by a gable overdoor on brackets and windows are 1/1 double-hung. The frame construction is finished in white asphalt shingles and sits on a foundation that is not seen . The j gable roof is covered with tan interlocking asphalt shingles and features two gable dormers and a shed dormer. There is an exterior brick chimney on the north side and a four-car detached garage, as well as a tin shed. The axis of the main roof lies perpendicular to the street. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site and surrounding area lend the property significance. This property was built for Judge A. P. Armstrong, a prominent lawyer and judge of early Bozeman. Armstrong uho built a number of residences, including the one at 307 South Willson for his own use in 1883, sold this iresidence at 219 South Willson to A. E. Yerkes, editor of the Bozeman Chronicle soon after its completion. Yerkes worked for a number of newspapers in Pennsylvania and Montana until he arrived in Bozeman a in 1883. He began the Bozeman Chronicle under the ownership of Samuel Langhorn and that same year he purchased the newspaper as owner/editor. This structure qualifies as a contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Civic Phase of Bozeman 's historic/architectural development.
