PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance,

This detached one-story single-family residence has a T-shaped plan
with a shed-roofed front porch with spindle railing on one side of a
frontally projecting bay window below a cross=axial gable roof extension
from the main roof. The brick construction has 1/1 double-hung windows
with decorative wood lintels. The gable roof is covered with asphalt
shingles and lies parallel to the street.

This property was built for Thomas Lewis , an early pioneer of Bozeman.
Born in 1842 in Ohio, he came west and settled in Bozeman in 1866.
Engaging in a variety of businesses, in 1882 he joined with L. H. Carey in
the manufacturing of brick for a few years. Probably this business-
provided the bricks for his residence. Lewis served as a County Commissioner
in 1889 and as a City Commissioner in 1896.

This building and its neighbors on either side (buildings 2 and 4) , were built
at the same time and have similar d•2tails. This house's owner/builder operated a
brickyard in Bozeman in 1882. All three buildings utilize the same type of brick,

windows , have half-octagonal bay windows, etc , This house rlroof�d The tin a baytw�ndou i
to the west (rear) . The original sectimi has a steep gable
located on the center front with an open porch to the north of the bay. The window
on the sides of the building have a stone keystone flanked by soldier brit'ks . All
windows have dressed stone sills.

Thomas Lewis came to [Bozeman in 1866 and engaged in various businesses . In 18f'.
he and a partner opened a brick yard and the following year he built this house for
family. From the style of the buildings , it is probable that he also furnished the
brick and built the two Houses on either side of this one as well . Among the subse
quent owners were Loren B. Olds (architect for the P•ladison County Courthouse) , Profi.
Frank W. Traphagen (teacher of chemistry and natural sciences at the College) , and
Walsh (State Legislator from Gallatin County in 1899) .
