A. Fielding PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance, noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials. Discuss significant architectural features. This detached two-and-one-half story multi-family residence has an L-shaped plan with a gabled entrance supported by triple Boric columns on each side , and a new rear addition. The facade is asymmetrical and consists of an off-center front entrance with arched, ornamented and carved window. The 1/1 double-hung windows are shuttered and there is an aluminum awning on the first floor, as well as a small circular window in the gable ends. The newer rear addition has 4/4 windows. The frame construction is finished in beveled siding with shakes on the pediment and rests on a cut stone foundation. The gable-hipped combination roof is covered with red-grey asphalt shingles and features returning eaves and a pair of corbeled brick exterior chimneys on one side. The axis of the roof is perpendicular to the street. An addition has been added to the original square house to form the ell . Outbuildings include a garage with a shed roof and novelty siding. HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,important events,and/or historical patterns associated with the struclure'S:e and surrounding area lend the property significance. This property was built for Fred A. Fielding from plans by local builders Vreeland (first name not identifiable) . Fielding, a relative of the General Lester Willsons and for whom Fred Fielding Willson was named , came to Montana and entered the mercantile business with General Willson. This structure qualifies as a contributing element within a potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect of the Civic Phase of Bozeman 's historic/architectural development. INTEGRITY: Assess the degree to which the structure/site,and surrounding area accurately convey the historical associations of the property. Willson -- Fielding House This building appears on the 1889 Sanborn insurance map , It is a two story whi frame building made of channeled T & G siding and shingles with a steep east-west gable. The second floor windows are framed by dark green shutters . There is an ope porth on the northwest corner with quasi -Doric columns . The building has undergone extensive remodeling and has been divided into apar� ments . Due to these alterations it was not classified as a pivotal building in the District. 45. 420 S.
