Armstrong PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance, noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features. This detached two-and-one-half story single-family residence has a rectangular plan with a lower-roofed addition on one end. The inset front entrance has decorative doric half-columns and ornamentation. The facade is asymmetrical and consists of an off-center front entrance with fixed, shuttered 9-pane windows , and a small fixed window in the dormer on the addition. The addition frame construction is finished in aluminum siding and joins the original brick construction. The gable roof is covered with cedar shingles and has a dormer in the addition and an exterior brick chimney. The axis of the roof is parallel to the street. Outbuildings include a garage. _ w r— HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Justify how the persons,Import ant events,and/or historical patterns associated with the structure/site and surrounding area lend the property significance. i This property is significant because it is associated with a person important in Bozeman history, Fred F. Willson. Son of General Lester S. Willson, an early Bozeman pioneer, Willson was born in 1877 in Bozeman. He attended Montana State College for two years and graduated from Columbia University in architecture in 1902. He studied for two years abroad and upon his return, Willson practied with C. S. Haire, in Helena and Butte. In his long practice from 1910-1956, he designed many public, commercial and residential buildings. i This structure is potentially eligible for the National Register because iof its historical associations and because of its architectural significance. i t INTEGRITY: Assess the degree to which the structure/site,and surrounding area accurately convey the historical associations of the property. DeHaas , 1978 9. 511 S. Willson -- Ponforton House This two story brick and frame house is painted white . It has a steep gable rc, I with 'dormers facing the street. A large brick chimney is located on the south wall . The casement windows are flanked by dark red shutters . The northern third of the building is of frame construction, two stories in height; this portion has its own I steep gable roof having a single dormer. Erected in 1938-39, the Colonial Revival building was designed by architect Fred F . Willson . 9. 511 S.
