PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structure/site,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance,
noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features.
This detached two-and-one-half story double-family residence has a square plan
with an enclosed gable-roofed second story sun room above an enclosed hip-roofed
front porch. The facade is asymmetrical and consists of an off-center front
entrance with 4/4 double-hung windows and a pair of 16/1 double-hung windows
in the gable ends. The frame construction is finished in board and batten
and rests on a sandstone foundation. The multi-gabled roof is covered with
grey asphalt shingles and features a decorative semi-circular roof-peice at
the gable corner and decorative returning eaves. There is a central brick
chimney. Outbuildings include a barn and a carriage house.

This property is significant because the residence is associated with a person
important to Bozeman history, John S. Mendenhall. Born in 1835 in Indiana,
Mendenhall came west and settled in Bozeman 1864 and formed in the Gallatin
Valley. In 1868, he set up a general mercantile store with Achilles Lamme,
at the present 27 East Main. The Mendenhall family lived in this house for
nearly 50 years.
This structure is potentially eligible for the National Register because
of its historical associations and because of its architectural significance.
