This detached one-and-one-half story single-family residence has a square plan with an enclosed front vestibule with steep gable roof, and a second gabled roof extension above the vestibule. The facadje is asymmetrical and con its of a central front entrance with fixed and 6/1 double-hung windows. The frame construc tion is finished in stucco with half timbers and the gable roof is covered with a dull brown painted cedar siding. The axis of the main roof is parallel to the street. Outbuildings include a two-car garage. I I This property is significant because i_t is associated with a person important i in Bozeman history, Fred F. Willson. Son of General Lester S. Willson, an early Bozeman pioneer, Willson was born in 1877 in Bozeman. He attended Montana State College for two years and graduated from Columbia University In architecture in 1902. Ile studied for two years abroad and upon his return, Willson practiced with C.S. Haire in Helena and Butte. In his long practice from 1910-19,56, he designed many public, residential and commercial buildings. Willson designed this house for Charles Anceney a well-known rancher and stockman of an early Gallatin Valley family. DeHaas, 1978 38. 704 S. Willson Charles Anceney, rancher/stockman, had this Fred F, Willson designed house bui' in 1929. About 1941 it was acquired by !Mayo Story Dean, daughter of Nelson Story, (who had been Lt. Governor of Montana) and granddaughter of Nelson Story. Her unclf T. B. Story, built the house next door (building no . 39) during this time period. A later owner was Louis Spain , manager of O��renhouse Hardware. 38. 704 S. Willson Also designed by Fred F. Willson, and built in 1929, this is an example of yet another style he employed. The house is one and one-half stories in height with st gables. The building is stuccoed and painted a beige color. The gable ends have ; half timber treatment, the boards being painted dark brown. The entry vestibule pr- to the west and has its own gable roof lower than the house roof. The gable end a! ! the entry also has a half-timber treatment. A detached garage is located on the sou east corner of the lot.
