PHYSICAL DESCRIPTION: Describe present appearance of structurelsite,then contrast and compare that with it's original appearance,
noting additions,alterations,and changes in materials.Discuss significant architectural features.
This detached one-and-one-half story single-family residence has a rectangular
plan with a recessed porch across the front supported by elaborate wood and
brick columns and a solid brick railing. The symmetrical facade consists of
a central front entrance with 12/1 and 16/1 double-hung windows. The frame con-
struction is finished in brick coursing and the gable roof is covered with red
asphalt shingles and features a pair of joined dormers in front. The roof has
exposed rafters and lies parallel to the street. It has a brick chimney. The
outbuildings include a garage.

This property was built for William R. C. Stewart , a partner of the law
' firm of Hartman Bros. and Stewart. He served as Gallatin County Attorney
and later as judge for the 9th Judicial District in 1902-1913.

potential historic district due to its association with the residential aspect
of the Civic Phase of Bozeman' s historic/architectural development.

35. 804 S. Willson -- Stewart (louse
The building at the corner of S . Killson and J. College is a one and one-half
story frame building with tan shingle siding . It has a wide open porch across the
west facade that also extends partway around to the north. The paired square columns
of the porch lack capitals but have arc brackets with a triangular cutout. The wall
railing of the porch is of red brick. The steep gable roof runs north and south,
parallel to S. Willson . The main roof plane forms a window well above the porch for
wall of the second floor. The building was built about 1912.

Judge William R. C. Stewart built and owned this house from about 1912 to 1928.
Stewart had come to Bozeman in 1892 and was admitted to the bar in 1894 . The follows
year he became a member of the firm of Hartman and Hartman (buildings no . 5 and 14)
he was elected County Attorney in November, 1888. He was appointed Judge of the 9th
' Judicial District in 1902, retiring theoefrom in 1913. After this he continued prac '
in Bozeman until his death in 1926. One of his brothers was Sam V. Stewart, elected
Governor of the State of Montana , 1912.
